This is a plan for my shool magazine. I have used an appropriate font for my title as it creates a proffesional yet approachable feel. I have used different shades of green as it is a friendly and inviting colour and it also represents the school colours, I have also used a picture of a tree (the school logo) and the school moto to represent the school further and i have added photos of figure heads in the school and students to make the front cover more exciting and eye catching.

Mood Board
I have stared to think about a
colour scheme for my magazine and I have chosen to base it on
the different shades of green as it is the school colours. I am planning on
using different shades of green to make it interesting and more appealing.
I will use light colours on the background so it isnt too in your face but also not too boring, then I will use a darker green behind the master head to make it more eye catching.
This is my mood board I have based it on neutral green colours to create a healthy and frinedly enviroment.

Analysis of a real school magazine
To get a better idea of how my school magaine will look I have chosen to anaylse a real school magazine and to think about why they have chosen things like font, colour themes, images and logos.
This is a school magazine for The Hertfordshire and Essex High School and College. The master head is in formal white writing that contrasts to the blue background and although the size is quite small it still looks really official. Through looking at other school magazines I have found that to title doesn't have to be too over bearing as there isn't any other competitive magazines, it just needs to be bright enough to catch your eye and to seem appealing.
They have also used the school logo which makes it seem official and they have then based the rest of colour theme on the colours used in the logo which creates a professional and education feel.
They have used images of students communicating and doing practical work it gives the school a united feel and makes the school seem like a safe and friendly environment.
They have also used a positioning statement 'Excellence for All' it promotes the school to be high achieveing and a well respected.

Codes and conventions analysis
Now I have used the codes and conventions that I have researched and used them to analyse a real magazine.
The master head on this cover is in capitals and is a bright fuchsia pink colour. The magazine chose this style because it is bright and eye catching. It also suits the genre of the magazine and the colour choice instantly gives the reader a insight into what the magazine is all about.
The central image is a mid shot photo of Kristen Stewart who is a leading figure in the acting world, a mid shot was used to show the importance of the person , we can only see her face and the top of her torso this implies that the rest of her isn't important and we are only focused on her face and clothes. As Vogue is a fashion forward magazine Kristen is wearing interesting clothes that we would see people wear every day, this makes the magazine seem developed and attractive and creates an exclusive feel. It also takes up the whole page adding to its impotance.
The cover lines are on top of the image and are either whit or bright pink, this matches the master head so it looks more proffesional and the colour scheme suits its target audience of women 18-25. They give us an insight into what is included in the magazine and enourages the reader to buy it.
There is a positioning statement at the bottom of the cover this is used to promote the magazine claiming that if you are looking for fashion magazines then this one it is better than any others.

Font investigation
As part of my preliminary test I will be making a school magazine and I have started to think about what type of font I will use. Below I have tested out a few fonts to see which will link to the rest of my text and suit the target audience.
Time New Roman Idsall Weekly
This text is clear and easy to read but I also feel that it is slightly too official for a school magazine and that it doesn't have the relaxed, calm feel that it needs.
Agency FB Idsall Weekly
I like this font as it has a formal feel but it is still laid back which creates the perfect atmosphere for my target audience, making it more appealing to the reader.
Chiller Idsall Weekly
I think that this font is fun however it doesn't seem professional enough I think it would be more suited for a title to a book rather than a newspaper.
Brush Script Std Idsall Weekly
I think that this font is interesting however it is a bit too old fashioned and some people may find some of the letters hard to read.
From my research I have come to the conclusion that I will most likely use the fonts "Agency FB" for the front cover of my magazine.

Codes and conventions of magazines
Today I researched all of the code
and conventions that are used in magazines.
Master head- this is the title of the magazine and is
usually bold and bright to attract the readers eye. The font and style is
suitable for the genre and target audience. It becomes recognisable and seen as
a brand.
Central image- this usually takes
up the whole page and will show a figure head/ idol that represents the
particular genre. Photos always increase interest and make it seem appealing to
the audience.
Cover lines- a small insight about
what is included in the magazine can be quotes or names of articles. They
usually frame the centre image and gives the reader more information of what is
inside the magazine which creates interest for the reader.
‘puff and buzz’- phrases- these are bold statements that attract the reader. A ‘puff’ is something that implies the reader will get something for free and a ’Buzz’ is stimulating language such as ‘exclusive’ or ‘never before seen’ and the make the readers feel like this magazine has the edge on any others.
Positioning statement- sometimes
referred to as a slogan usually positioned near the master head to ensure
people read it. Its used to promote the magazine claiming that it is better
than any others.
Colour themes- on the front of a
magazine only a few colours are used but they
are always suitable for their genre e.g.. Sports magazines typically
use the colours blue and red where as a teenage gossip
magazine would use pinks ad purples.
Barcode, dateline and price- it i usually on the back and its shows the price of the product and when it was published, the barcode is only useful to the retailer.
